Androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern hair loss, is a genetic condition that causes progressive hair loss on the scalp. It’s caused by an excessive response to androgens and affects up to half of all men and women.
Men
Hair loss begins above the temples and gradually moves back to form an “M” shape. The hairline recedes and hair thins at the top of the head, which can lead to partial or complete baldness.
Women
Hair loss is usually more diffuse than in men, and the hairline typically doesn’t recede. Hair thins at the top of the head and the middle part widens. Women rarely become completely bald.
Androgenetic alopecia tends to run in families, and having a close relative with patterned hair loss is a risk factor. In men, androgenetic alopecia has been linked to other medical conditions, including coronary heart disease, prostate enlargement, and high blood pressure. In women, it’s associated with an increased risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
